It sure does get windy out here. We drove from Kearney to Sidney today and winds were in the 20 - 30 mph range with gusts much higher. This windsock at airport along road was almost straight. Lots of tumbleweed crossing the highway and Dennis had his hands full keeping the motorhome between the white lines.
We were thankful this was a short drive for us. We stopped to see one of the original Pony Express Stations in Gothenburg NE. It is a really nice town, very well kept properties and friendly people. It was odd to have strangers waving to us as we drove through town. We stopped so we could mail Austin's birthday card with a Pony Express stamp and then wrote a few very quick cards to grandkids (except for Wil and I need to find an address).
Then it was back on I-80 to Sidney NE. Sections of the road were like driving on washboards so between the wind and washboards, we had a lot of movement in the coach. Libby would have been besides herself. We planned to camp at Cabela's and were glad when we arrived. This is the town where Cabela's originated but the first store is downtown. The one at the campground is large and has a beautiful campground attached. Full hookups including WiFi and cable for $22.
After setting up we took off in the van to visit Chimney Rock. The site is along the trail used by the Mormons and others during their westward trek. So we thought it would be appropriate for the Lehman's to visit it. It was as awesome as the tour books said it would be. There was a nice Visitors Center and short film about the western migration through this area. It was good to be driving in the van for a change.
We are seeing a lot of feedlots for beef cattle in this area. Some of the lots are huge and conditions are not the best. Makes us want to consider whether or not we want to eat beef.
The area around Sidney is mostly open range - ranches. We saw quite a few abandoned farms and lots of abandoned machinery. Still not seeing much wildlife except for a few turkeys and an occasional deer (both live and roadkill, btw).
We continue to be entertained by the signs for hometown places.
